Also referred to as skin needling and collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. The process involves rolling a wand or pen affixed with mini-needles to create tiny wounds. These wounds are miniscule and only skin-deep, but your body responds with alarm, sending in healing factors that boost skin strength, radiance, and health. Microneedling can also be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures or topical medications to increase their effectiveness.
When it comes to aesthetic concerns, microneedling is best suited to treat:
This procedure is chemical-free, minimally invasive, and brings patients beautiful results.
Microneedling is minimally invasive, requiring no downtime. It’s considered safe for most people who are in overall good health.
Microneedling is safe for almost anyone. The only contraindications are for those who currently have acne, infections, or wound healing issues. In those cases, you will need to wait until you are medically cleared.
Microneedling helps rejuvenate, refresh, and restore the skin by triggering the body’s own natural process of healing. During treatment, fine needles are passed over the affected area. These needles create micro-injuries that are large enough to stimulate healing, but small enough that there is minimal downtime. In fact, this treatment is so gentle that it is suitable for even the most sensitive areas on the face and body.
Once these needles have pierced the skin, the regeneration process begins. Blood circulates to the area, enriching it with healing growth factors. Collagen and elastin, two structural proteins responsible for how tight and full the skin is, are repaired and restored. Over time, the treatment area begins to become tighter, healthier, and more youthful-looking.
Because of the healing response that it stimulates, microneedling can be used in conjunction with topical growth factors and anti-aging serums to increase their effectiveness.
Although microneedling is a relatively painless procedure, you may still experience some discomfort. There are a few things you can do before and after the procedure to minimize the pain you might experience.

Microneedling Recovery Time. Healing from microneedling usually takes a mere 24 hours. However, it may take up to two to three days depending on the extent of the treatment. You can are free to return to work or school immediately after treatment and wear makeup 24 hours after your treatment.
Before treatment begins, a topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area to improve patient comfort. The amount of time that each microneedling procedure takes depends on the size of the treatment area and each patient’s aesthetic goals.
Once treatment is complete, full recovery usually takes between 3-4 days. While some patients only undergo a single treatment, many attend several treatment sessions in order to get the best results. A 4-6 week healing period is typically required between microneedling procedures.
The effects of a micro needling pen are not permanent, so clinicians recommend a maintenance program which could include quarterly procedures to keep skin looking it’s best. This along with an effective home skin care product routine will prolong the results and increase effectiveness.
1. Reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles
No one wants to look older than they are. But premature aging that presents as fine lines and wrinkles does just that. The tiny injuries from a microneedling session boost collagen and elastin production to fight lines and wrinkles.
Collagen and elastin are compounds in your skin that add structure and strength, lending a youthful quality. The wound-healing mechanisms also stimulate your body to produce new skin cells, making fine lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles less apparent.
2. Scar treatment
Because microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production, it’s also super effective in addressing acne and other scars on your skin. The only type of scar not possible to treat is keloid, or raised, scars.
3. Sun damage
Microneedling is effective in reducing the appearance of sun damage, particularly hyperpigmentation and age spots. If you have a blotchy, brownish complexion, which is probably a result of too many days of sunning, microneedling and its ability to stimulate new collagen and skin cells can reinvigorate your look and even out your tone.
4. Anti-aging
Aging doesn’t just show up as wrinkles and discoloration. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity, so it appears lax. Aging skin may also look dull and lack a lustrous glow. Microneedling can change this.
The buildup of collagen that occurs in response to the tiny wounds can improve skin structure to fight sagging. Plus, just 24 hours following a session, you experience a radiant, fresh glow.
5. Shrink pores
Despite the fact that microneedling involves punching holes in your skin, it doesn’t increase the size of your pores. In fact, it helps your pores appear much smaller. When the collagen around your pores is stimulated, the area around each pore plumps, making the pore itself almost disappear.
6. Improves the effectiveness of topical products
Post-microneedling is the prime time to apply anti-aging treatments, moisturizers, and other topical treatments that boost skin health and appearance. The micro-holes receive creams, serums, and gels more readily and deliver them deeper into your dermis than when applied regularly.
7. Fights stretch marks
Microneedling works just about anywhere on your body. It can be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks that show up after periods of rapid growth, such as during pregnancy.
8. Rosacea reduction
The ruddiness and skin thickening of rosacea can be addressed with microneedling. If you suffer from this skin condition, you experience a hastened breakdown of collagen. Microneedling stimulates the growth of collagen to offset and replace this breakdown, so your skin looks less inflamed and irritated.
9. Acne improvements
Because of the improved delivery of topical applications, you can use microneedling to help improve the effectiveness of topical acne treatments. Regular microneedling applications at Signature Skin Care can help your skin clear up.
10. Fewer side effects than laser or intensive peels
Microneedling’s effects are comparable to laser and chemical peel treatments but without the long downtime. You can enjoy a glowing complexion 24-72 hours after microneedling, but with laser resurfacing, your recovery may take three to 10 days. Your complexion needs 14-21 days to bounce back after a medium or intensive peel.
While microneedling is a safe, effective procedure, there are some potential risks and side effects. These include:
