PRP for Hair Growth

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is taken from a small sample of your own blood. It is then injected into the thinning areas of your scalp and also used topically with microneedling for a two-pronged approach to stimulate new hair growth. This process decreases shedding and strengthens the hair follicles to restore hair fullness and density.

How PRP Works

Hair loss and thinning hair often occur as the hair follicle growth slows down or stops functioning completely. PRP works by introducing new growth factors into problem areas of the scalp. Once injected, these growth factors — which are found within the plasma — increase blood flow, which triggers dead or dormant hair follicles to start a new, active growth phase. For many patients, this results in fuller, thicker, healthier hair.

Every patient is different, with their own unique hair loss. During your consultation, we will let you know how many treatment sessions you can expect.

Who is the best candidate for PRP hair restoration?

There are many causes of hair loss, and it’s important to understand that your specific type of hair loss may not respond to PRP treatments. Because of this, Dr. Ramirez Gavidia will determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment. In general, however, PRP hair restoration is most effective for those who have androgenetic alopecia.

Are there limitations after a PRP treatment?

Following a PRP treatment, wait a few hours before shampooing your hair. You’ll also need to avoid blow-drying or dyeing your hair for at least 48 hours.

Dr. Ramirez Gavidia’s Holistic Approach

Dr. Ramirez Gavidia is known for his unique holistic approach in which he combines procedures to achieve comprehensive and holistic rejuvenation. Instead of performing just one procedure, he will always combine treatments to deliver artistic balance and overall improvement. His focus is on the patient as a whole — not just one area.

What to Expect During a PRP Treatment

Before the procedure begins, we will cleanse and numb your scalp. After this, a PRP treatment has three main parts:

  • The blood draw: About two ounces of blood will be drawn from your arm, just like it is when you visit the doctor.
  • The centrifuge: The blood goes into a centrifuge (spinning machine) to separate the nutrient-dense plasma from red blood cells and other impurities.
  • The injections: The purified plasma is then placed inside of a syringe so that it can be injected into targeted areas of the scalp. Once the plasma has been injected, the growth factors instantly begin working to re-grow hair. However, results take time to see.

Although your scalp will be numbed before the procedure, you may feel some pressure during the injections. Once the injections are finished, we can apply ice or a compress to the area if you desire.

Side Effects

Although PRP treatments do not require any downtime, you may experience some side effects. The most common include:

  • Scalp soreness/tenderness
  • Swelling in the treated area
  • Itchy scalp
  • Pinpoint bleeding at injection sites

Results from PRP treatments are gradual. You may notice early results as soon as three months, but for many the difference is visible at 6-12 months. It begins with less hair loss, then re-growth can be seen. Multiple treatments are required and some patients will need to continue treatments to maintain their results, depending on the severity of hair loss.
