How do Dermal Fillers Work?

Many of the wrinkles that come with age are caused by depleted amounts of collagen, a structural protein in the skin that accounts for how smooth, tight, and evenly- textured it is. Dermal fillers help make up for this depletion by adding extra volume and support to places where collagen levels have become particularly low: fine lines and wrinkles. By adding both quick correction and long-term volume to these areas, dermal fillers help promote collagen growth and structure to the face for the long-run. Because most dermal fillers are absorbed by the body after a period of time, regular injections are necessary to maintain any dramatic results. At RG Plastic Surgery and Rejuvenation Spa, we offer our clients Juvederm®, Restylane®, and culptra® to meet all their injectable rejuvenation goals.

FDA-approved for cosmetic use in 2006, Juvederm® is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that can provide between 9-18 months of wrinkle correction depending on the type of filler selected. Smooth marionette lines, plump lips, lift cheeks, contour your chin and blur smile lines. Injection sessions typically take no longer than 20 minutes and feature little to no downtime.

The Juvederm® line of products is tailored to patient comfort and beautiful results. Juvederm® is created using Hylacross technology that makes the hyaluronic gel smoother and more malleable than other dermal fillers. It is also indicated with lidocaine, a mild anesthetic that helps ease some of the pain and discomfort of an injection.

Restylane® is a reputable family of dermal fillers that can treat a wide range of aesthetic concerns. It is comprised of hyaluronic acid, and can be used to correct nasolabial folds, add volume to the lips, and fill in sunken or wrinkled cheeks. Restylane® injections are fast and easy, usually taking between 15-30 minutes to complete. The amount of time that the results of Restylane® are visible depends on the area being treated. While results usually last between 4-6 months in the nasolabial folds, they can last for over a year in the lips.

Sculptra® Aesthetic works subtly and gradually over time to create a more youthful-looking appearance. It is meant to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds. Sculptra® is not comprised of hyaluronic acid and instead uses poly-L-lactic acid. Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Sculptra Aesthetic helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost due to aging. Because of this, Sculptra Aesthetic utilizes a treatment regimen of up to four injection sessions that are scheduled about three weeks apart.

Sculptra Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen, an underlying cause of facial aging, for results that can potentially last more than two years.
