What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects boys and men. Due to hormonal fluctuations, the breasts of affected individuals become enlarged and look similar to the breasts of women. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and most commonly develops during stages of life where there are significant hormone fluctuations. These include infancy, puberty, and old age.
While gynecomastia poses no real medical danger to the people that suffer from it, it can wear away at the affected individual’s self-esteem and cause him to feel self-conscious about his appearance.
What Causes it?
This condition can have a number of different causes, but the most common one is hormone fluctuations. Both men and women possess “male” and “female” hormones, but these hormones are present in different amounts in each of the sexes. Gynecomastia develops when estrogen levels increase out of proportion to androgen levels. While these levels usually balance themselves within six months to two years of developing gynecomastia symptoms, they sometimes persist past this point. For these individuals, surgical male breast reduction may be the best way to combat the condition.
How Can Male Breast Reduction Help?
Male breast reduction surgery can entirely eliminate the breast enlargement associated with gynecomastia, restoring both a sense of confidence and a masculine, lean appearance to the men affected by it. Best of all, the results of this surgery are permanent.
During surgery, excess fatty and glandular tissues are removed from the chest. This can usually be done using simple liposuction techniques. Large areolas and inverted nipples can also be corrected during surgery.
This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Common side effects include bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness. Fortunately, these usually resolve themselves within a few weeks of receiving surgery.
